Background

For over 20 years, the Sea Turtle Restoration Project has worked to protect leatherback sea turtles from slipping closer to extinction. The largest and most majestic of all sea turtles survived the extinction of the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago and is now struggling to survive more than another few decades due to deadly industrial fishing, illegal poaching, and threats from vessel strikes and ocean pollution.

The fact sheets and information below provide a foundation to learn more about these amazing sea turtles and our actions to save them. One of the most imperiled of all Pacific leatherback populations nests in Costa Rica, where we partner on beach protections and perform research at Cocos Island. Pacific leatherbacks in the U.S. have benefited from our years of political conservation work.
